Freezeout Lake: A Snow Goose Soiree

Trip Highlights
Each spring, the wide-open prairie skies of north-central Montana come alive with one of the most extraordinary wildlife spectacles in the American West. At Freezeout Lake, hundreds of thousands of migrating waterfowl gather in a breathtaking convergence of sound, motion, and light — creating the largest waterfowl migration event in Montana.
Timed to coincide with peak migration in late March and early April, this immersive day journey offers guests a rare opportunity to witness massive flocks of snow geese rising in synchronized waves, tundra swans calling across the wetlands, and countless ducks and shorebirds pausing to rest and refuel along the Pacific Flyway.

Travel Details
This tour begins and ends in Missoula, Montana. We will have a 2.5-3 hour drive to Freezeout Lake. Once there, we will have ample opportunity to explore the area and look for large flocks of multiple species. Our group will spend 5-6 hours identifying species and discussing the ecology and conservation efforts in the area. Around midday we will break for lunch and soak in the views. Vault toilets are available at several locations on site. Montana weather in early spring can be quite unpredictable so be sure to have ample insulating layers and a rain jacket.
