If you’re dreaming about exploring Montana’s wild landscapes but aren’t sure where to start, you’re not alone. Western Montana offers a mix of rugged peaks, glacial-carved valleys, wildlife-rich forests, and deep cultural history—but knowing how to experience it safely and meaningfully can feel overwhelming. That’s where guided trips come in. Whether you’re joining North Sky Adventures for a weekend trip or a weeklong itinerary, your first guided adventure should feel welcoming and approachable.
Choosing the Right Trip for You
The best place to start is by thinking about what kind of experience you want. Ask yourself:
Do I want a relaxing, scenic outing or something more active and challenging?
Am I drawn to history, wildlife, geology, or simply spending time in nature?
Do I want a single-day adventure or a multi-day trip with food and lodging included?
Our itineraries are designed to match a variety of comfort levels and interests—from beginner-friendly snowshoe outings to story-rich day hikes and immersive, fully planned tours.
If you're unsure which trip is the best fit, we’re always happy to help match you with the right experience.
What to Bring (Seasonal Essentials)
Montana’s weather has a personality of its own, and being prepared makes all the difference. While we provide much of the group gear on our tours, here are a few staples to keep in mind:
Spring & Summer
Breathable layers
Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen)
Comfortable hiking shoes
Reusable water bottle
Light rain jacket (mountain showers are sneaky)
Fall
Warm layers you can easily add or remove
Beanie and lightweight gloves
Waterproof layers for changing weather
Winter
Insulated winter boots
Warm hat, gloves, and neck gaiter
Non-cotton base layers (merino wool, polyester, etc.)
A thermos for warm drinks
Traction devices (YakTrax, Micro Spikes, etc.)
Don’t worry if you’re new to all this—when you book a trip, we send a clear packing list with everything you’ll need.
Understanding Activity & Fitness Levels
Guided adventures in Western Montana don’t have to mean long, strenuous hikes. We offer experiences for all comfort and fitness levels:
Leisurely: Short walks with lots of time for interpretation, photography, and scenic views.
Moderate: Steadier trails, a few hills, and more time moving.
Active: Longer distances or more elevation for guests seeking a challenge.
You'll see tours rated on a difficulty scale of 1-5 with one being the easiest. We have a few additional parameters to help you choose the right one.

If you're unsure where you fit, just ask—we’re pros at helping guests make the right choice. Our goal is always to set you up for success and comfort, not to push you past your limits.
Why Go With a Guide?
Exploring with a professional guide offers benefits you don’t get on your own:
Safety & Preparedness: We handle route planning, weather decisions, emergency preparedness, and on-trail navigation so you can simply enjoy the experience.
Local Knowledge: Learn about wildlife behavior, geology, Indigenous history, early settlement stories, and the seasonal rhythms that shape this region.
Enriched Experience: A guided outing transforms a scenic walk into a deeper understanding of place. Guests often say they come away noticing more, appreciating more, and feeling more connected to the landscape.
Comfort & Confidence: No need to stress about logistics—we’ve handled them for you.

What to Expect After Booking
Once you choose your adventure, you’ll receive:
